Cameron Highlands

It's been years since I last visited Cameron Highlands. Yup, the coldness is still there, but it is nothing as compared to the time when I stayed in the apartment near the Brinchang town. I can still recalled it was freezing cold at night while nowadays I can sleep soundly with just a cover of blanket without feeling any numbness in my hands and feet.

I guess those mushrooming apartments and hotels in Brinchang (made possible by three route access to Cameron Highlands : KL to Tapah, KL to Simpang Pulai, and KL to Raub ) have a big contribution in the raising the highlands temperature. With this, come the teh tarik color river water and landslide along the road up the highlands.

Using the KL to Tapah Road to access the tourist spot, we stopped halfway at the waterfall in our climb to Tanah Rata.

No swimming or bathing signs are erected in the vicinity of the waterfall but if you are a Malaysian, this is a typical scene.

Here're some souvenir stores selling the local handicrafts. You won't get the chance to but some of the crafts such as those handwoven rotan and bamboo baskets and food covers  at the top of the highlands.

After departing from KL around 8:00 am, we reached Tanah Rata before noon. Took our lunch at Restoran Sri Brinchang, a double lot shophouse. The price of the food there were pretty cheap, by Cameron Highlands standard. Only RM4  for a plate of chicken rice and fried rice or mee. A can of coke will lighten up RM2 from your pocket.

Next, we stopped at a vegetable and cactus stall in Brinchang.

Cacti do come in a variety of colors, from yellow, orange, red to pink!

More awkward looking cactus which you won't normally see in KL.

And now it is the flower's turn.

It will take a miracle to grow these flowers in the hot weather here in KL.

Next stop: Boh Tea Shop in Sg Palas. Once entering the road with the sign "9 km  to Gunung Brinchang", the road turns windy and single lane. Thank God not many people were here, if not there would be a massive jam reaching the Boh Tea Shop. There's another Boh Tea Shop before Tanah Rata (Habuan). The road leading towards the Boh Tea Shop and Bee Farm there is less windy, wider and shorter distance from the main road.

The trail to Boh Tea Centre.

Finally, after the 250 m climb by foot ...

The majestic view of Sungai Palas Boh Tea plantation...

One can opt to join the Boh Tea Factory Tour which is held twice daily for RM35/person. Can't recall the first trip time but the second trip starts at 3:00 pm daily. After sipping hot tea at the Tea Shop, we left Sungai Palas Boh Tea Centre to head for Mountain Strawberry Farm.

The drive there is terrible, the road is slippery and steep. And did I mention single lane? Thank goodness there were only one or two cars heading from the opposite direction.I really felt it was a lot further than the 0.3 km from the sign board to the farm.

This photo was taken by one of the friendly farmers there.

Due to the recent rainy days and endless pluckings, the strawberries here looks a bit less desirable.

According to the farmer, redder strawberries will appear in Jan next year. Visitors are free to pluck any strawberries they like which will be weighed at RM4 per 100 g. The animal farm is still under construction but if you want to see chickens, there are plenty of them there.

Have you seen how mushrooms are grown? If not, Cactus Point will provide an answer. You will find some spectacular mushrooms scene there.

Rows and rows of packet mushrooms arranged vertically and horizontally. Before this, I only thought mushrooms come in brown, gray and black but ... pink and yellow mushrooms?

I guess these hydroponic strawberries are more desirable. Bright red ripe strawberries ready to be plucked. After plucking, these strawberries can only last a day or two before they rot. So eat them soon!

In case you are wondering where are the cacti in Cactus Point ...

Finally, a trip to Sam Poh Temple where the Four Heavenly Kings resides. Not the Hong Kong 4 Heavenly Kings.

The Four Heavenly Kings that guards the different corners of the world.

Part of the 18 Lohans...

Cameron Highlands is synonymous with strawberries and cactus. Almost everywhere you go, you will find them. Strawberries not only come in real fruit, but also as floor mats, purses, slippers, key chains, fridge magnets and hotel. Oh yes, we stayed in StrawBerry Park Hotel.
